China CPI Grew Slightly in January 2009

Consumer price index (CPI) growth in January of 2009 was 1.0 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, urban area and rural area up by 0.7 and 1.5 percent respectively; the price of foodstuff, consumable expanded 4.2, 1.5 percent while price for non-foodstuff, services down by 0.6 and 0.8 percent respectively. CPI got an increase of 0.9 percent comparing with December, 2008: the price of foodstuff increased 3.3 percent, of which, fresh vegetable surged 22.4 percent and fresh egg up by 0.8 percent.

In terms of different categories, the price of foodstuff jumped 4.2 percent, year-on-year. Of the total, the price of meat, poultry and its processed products declined 2.8 percent (price of pork was down by 13.3 percent), that of fresh vegetable, grain, aquatic products, fresh eggs, and spices expanded 19.6, 3.9, 11.6, 1.3 and 5.6 percent respectively; that of oil and fat, fresh fruits got a decrease of 13.9 and 0.4 percent.

The price of tobacco, liquor and articles increased by 2.4 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, the price of tobacco and liquor rose by 0.2 and 6.0 percent respectively.

The price of clothing was down by 2.7 percent year-on-year, of which, the price of clothes declined 3.1 percent.

The price of household services, maintenance and renovation surging 2.6 percent year-on-year. Of which, the price of durable consumer goods rose by 0.6 percent, and that of household services, maintenance and renovation rose by 8.1 percent.

The price of medical care and personal articles increased 1.6 percent year-on-year. Of which, the price of western medicines up by 1.0 percent; that of traditional Chinese medicinal materials and medicines shot up by 3.3 percent; and that of health care services up by 0.7 percent.

The price of transportation and communication dropped 2.5 percent than in the previous month. Of which, the price of vehicles, fuel and spares, and telecommunication services fell 1.3, 8.2 and 18.8 percent; while that of using and maintaining of vehicles, intercity transportation and urban transportation expanded 0.9, 2.3 and 0.9 percent respectively.
